The first case of novel coronavirus in Australia (nCoV-19) was reported in the southeastern state of Victoria on the 25th of January 2020. Three cases were confirmed in New South Wales later the same day. In the following days and weeks, state and territory governments implemented restrictions and guidelines for the population, followed by strict measures from the federal government that included border closure, quarantine and social distancing.
In February 2021, a year after the first case of COVID-19 in the country, vaccinations began in Australia. The uptake of the vaccine rollout in the country was high, but as more of the nation began to open up in late 2021, Omicron began to spread quickly.
The Australian Government needed a fast testing solution that could screen residents and inbound persons for COVID-19. COVID-19 rapid testing already played a key part in helping curb and control the virus in other countries but was not yet widely available to the Australian public. However, with the eastern states showing very high case numbers, a new measure for helping to monitor and contain outbreaks (especially those of a hyper-infectious nature) was crucial sooner rather than later.
A highly sensitive, quick and reliable COVID-19 test was of the utmost importance.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests had been part of the country’s COVID testing and tracing strategy since the pandemic began. Still, the population needed a more accessible testing option to help release the bottleneck at PCR testing sites and support communities on a wider scale.
Departments of the Australian Government reached out to Santé to source and supply a solution.
